Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. A hand-woven camelid fiber tump line used to ease the burden of carrying massive loads, especially along rugged terrain. The lengthy straps are decorated with red-dyed strands along the midsection as well as one entire tassel end. The thick forehead pad features a central slit to better distribute the weight of the load that would be tied behind one's back via the lengthy tie cords. Size (full): 66" L (167.6 cm); (forehead pad): 7.75" L x 1" W (19.7 cm x 2.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Jim Carroll collection, Maryland, USA, excavated or purchased in Peru in the 1960s, thence by descent to present owners
