Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca, ca. 1500 CE. A finely crafted ceramic stirrup vessel representing an animal's head, his expressive visage with large ovoid eyes, a projecting snout, perky ears, face paint, scarification, or tattoos on the cheeks and forehead, and an impressive toothy grimace, finished in white slip with reddish brown and black painted details, including stylized geometrics on the backside. The face may represent an animal; however, it may also depict a shaman donning an animorphic mask. Stirrup spout vessels were the predominant ceramic form throughout the Pre-Columbian Peruvian region from the earliest cultures beginning around 1000 BCE until the conquest of the Inca in the 15th century. Stirrup spout vessels comprise an enormous array of styles and designs but have the common characteristic of a stirrup, or handle, and a spout. This example is particularly lively for its animorphic form. Size: 5" W x 7" H (12.7 cm x 17.8 cm)
