Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche III, ca. 400 to 500 CE. A beautiful, bichrome pottery flared bowl - called a florero - used in Moche ceremonies, painted via the "fine-line" technique. The interior rim features four sea birds - probably pelicans - in flight against a backdrop of dramatic white-capped waves. They fly around the vessel with their mouths open as if ready to swoop down into the sea and snap up fish. A bold red band underscores their presence, and a matching red band adorns the exterior base. To the Moche, birds symbolized many valued human qualities, like skill in hunting and battle. Size: 9.25" W x 5.7" H (23.5 cm x 14.5 cm)

Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection; ex-Bill Freeman collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA; former John Moyers collection, purchased ca. 2005
