Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery figure of sizable form depicting a semi-nude woman seated with legs tucked beneath a short skirt. The woman presents with one arm behind her head and the other extended in front of her, perhaps in a gesture of welcome or perhaps of defense. Her countenance exhibits generously lidded eyes, a prominent nose adorned with septum ring, a wide grin with revealed teeth, and tab-shaped ears, all beneath a simple cap that rests high on the forehead. Covered in red slip, this is an expressive example of ancient West Mexican pottery! Size: 6.375" L x 9.75" W x 16.7" H (16.2 cm x 24.8 cm x 42.4 cm)

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
