East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, Majiayao culture, ca. 3300 to 2000 BCE. A beautiful and impressively large polychrome pottery vessel, the piriform body painted in black and red on a cream ground with four circular crest-like motifs. The surrounding areas of the upper body are filled with thick linear bands while the lower body is unadorned. Size: 17.5" W x 17" H (44.4 cm x 43.2 cm)

The Majiayao culture was comprised of a group of Neolithic communities who lived primarily in the upper Yellow River region in eastern Gansu, eastern Qinghai, and northern Sichuan, China. The Majiayao culture represents the first time that the Upper Yellow River region was widely occupied by agricultural communities, and it is famous for its painted pottery.
