Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast of Mexico, northern Veracruz region, Huastec culture, ca. 600 to 900 CE. An exceptional female pottery figure seated with one leg crossed atop the other and holding both hands to her bent knees. Several ritual scarification nodules are present on each shoulder and encircle the waist, and a petite medallion around her neck resembles a knapped obsidian point. The woman leans slightly back as if in a hallucinogenic trance and stares upwards with ovoid eyes bearing three pupil impressions. The prominent nose is festooned with a thick ring that dangles above puffy lips, and the headdress exhibits dozens of evenly incised striations. Size: 7.5" W x 13.7" H (19 cm x 34.8 cm)

For another example of a Huastec female from the 1st to 7th century CE, please see The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1979.206.1084
