Description:

Southeast Asia or India, ca. 19th century or earlier. A stone lingam (linga) used as abstract representation of the Hindu god Shiva, slightly curved with ridges indicative of a glans head. Lingam, Sanskrit for "shaft of light" or "pillar of fire," are abstract representations of the Hindu god Shiva (or Siva) using a phallic form. Most lingas are non-figural in form, their phallic shape alluding to Shiva’s transcendent power and generative energy. Sometimes naturally shaped stones from rivers are used, sometimes carved, like this one, to further enhance their phallic appearance. They are often placed alongside representations of the goddess Shakti, known as the yoni, which is typically represented as a stylized vulva. This is one of the few truly abstract representations of a god found in Hinduism. Size: 12.25" L x 3.75" W (31.1 cm x 9.5 cm); 13" H (33 cm) on included custom stand.
