Description:

East Asia, China, Song Dynasty, ca. mid-10th to 12th century CE. A magnificent pottery jar boasting a massive form and an elegant silhouette. Built from red-hued clay, the ancient vessel presents a narrow base and thin walls that dramatically rise to a broad, rounded shoulder and a raised and rolled rim that gently flares outward. A series of 4 petite, trifurcated handles surround the rim. The sizeable jar is further adorned by incised decoration including dozens of horizontal, undulating rings starting midway up the body and continuing to the rim which is encompassed by an incised petaloid motif. Liberal remains of black glaze further embellish the rim and shoulder. Note the thick marine encrustations enveloping the exterior, as well as the shells and barnacles covering the interior - wonderful results of centuries spent on the ocean floor! Size: 17.1" Diameter x 19.3" H (43.4 cm x 49 cm)

Pottery jars like this example were typically made in the southern China Fujian or Guangdong Province. These jars would have held perishable goods such as pickled vegetables, spices, tea leaves or fish sauce.
