Description:

East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, Liangzhu culture, ca. 3300 to 2200 BCE. A gorgeous Neolithic jade axe of a traditional form that flares gradually towards a beveled edge for cutting and presents a single hole at the butt end. The stone is finely polished and inherently beautiful, presenting with mottled creamy white with a hint of sage green as well as vibrant peach and butterscotch hues. This axe is made of a mineral species of jade known as nephrite. Interestingly, Yu - the Chinese word for jade - is also an idea in Chinese culture that traditionally represents steadfastness and reliability, two qualities captured by remarkable tools that are also works of art like this example. Size: 4.5" W x 7.25" H (11.4 cm x 18.4 cm)

A jade axe created by the Liangzhu culture sold at Christie's Hong Kong for 68,750 HKD ($8865) - Sale 17742, 27 November 2019, Lot 2734.
