Northeastern Europe, Latvia, Viking, Iron Age, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. An impressive piece of wearable art - a Viking necklace comprised of about 3 dozen coiled bronze wire beads, 8 bronze cuff-like ornments comprised of skillfully folded-over wide bronze bands that present trios of concentric circles and striated borders in bas-relief - 5 interspersed with the upper section of coiled beads and 3 featured above the 6 danglers which are in turn comprised of more coiled beads with bell terminals that make a lovely jingling sound. All beads are original! Size: band measures 24" L (61 cm) with 5" L (12.7 cm) danglers

The Vikings - groups of people who left Scandinavia to plunder and colonize northern Europe (and who travelled as far afield as northeastern North America and the great kingdoms of the Middle East) - had a distinctive artistic tradition. Many of the metals that they had were acquired through conquest and the bronze for pieces like this were oftentimes melted down from other bronze objects. Bronze jewelry also served as a form of easily transported currency, and this piece would have demonstrated the wealth of its owner.
