Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit culture, ca. 150 BCE to 250 CE. An evocative pottery head of a warrior featuring wide, almond-shaped eyes, a hoop-adorned nose, and a gaping mouth exposing sharp teeth as though letting out a deep battle cry, all crowned by a conical helmet. Elaborate jewelry adorns his ears as fringe extends from below his helmet, perhaps intended as his hair. His delineated pupils gaze staunchly forward, as though determined to defend the grave in which he was placed. Size: 7.2" W x 13.3" H (18.3 cm x 33.8 cm); 17" H (43.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Charlotte, North Carolina, USA collection; ex-Bonham's San Francisco, California, USA, February 16th, 2009, "Ancient and Tribal Art," lot 5119
