Description:

Roman Empire, North Africa, 2nd to 3rd century CE. Rare and quite important Roman mosaic panel in small colorful stone tesserae. Framed by twin black borders and two-strand guilloche pattern executed in black, red, yellow and white, scene shows a crocodile and three "pygmies" - one female and two males. Each individual is identified in Greek inscriptions as Euphrasia (female on left), Neilas and Gryllos. Euphrasia is clapping as a Nile crocodile menaces Gryllos, adorned with a pierced phallus, who dances on a low rocky outcrop. Neilas is positioned above the crocodile, legs apart, also standing on a rock outcrop. Vegetation is shown in the field including lotus. Size: 58" L x 35.75" H (147.3 cm x 90.8 cm)

Nilotic scenes showing the activates of figures usually described as pygmies are common in mosaics and other Roman art forms, but the characteristics are more likely those associated with clinical dwarfism.

Provenance: private Dere family collection, acquired pre-1990.
