Description:

Italian, ca. 12th century CE, from Palazzo Odescalchi, Rome. Carved marble, on the lower end wreath of overlapping acanthus leaves. Short and long leaves alternate. Lotus buds sprout from the longer acanthus leaves. Torch-shaped chalices grow out of the shorter leaves. Acanthus leaves and volutes grow out of these chalices in turn. The volutes coming out of the shorter leaves meet above the lotus buds. Leaves subdivided by long drill channels, drilled holes inside the volutes. Chamfered kymation at the upper end.
