Description:

India/Pakistan, Gandharan, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. Massive and exceedingly rare pottery jar from this culture much better known for their gray schist statues and stelae. Rounded bulbous jar on slightly flattened base, tapered neck and rolled rim. Jar painted with 5 panels of running and jumping horned antelope, each in floral field with most having an extended tongue which merges into the vegetation. Above is a band of 11 antelope heads, these also in a floral background. Gandharan pottery is almost never seen on the market and this is by far the largest and finest of this rare type that we have ever seen. In any major gallery a jar like this would cost you $25,000+ if you could ever find one. Size: 16.5" W x 13" H (41.9 cm x 33 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Private New Jersey collection formed before 1990
