Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Middle Cauca Region, Caldas Complex, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. One of the finest examples of this style of figure that we have seen, with excellent incised details and bright pigment - and a rare female one too! She has a bright nose ornament made of solid 14K gold. She is painted with bright red pigment on the face, around her knees, and her upper body and arms. Size: 6" L x 9.75" W x 10.3" H (15.2 cm x 24.8 cm x 26.2 cm)
This figure's face has negative resist black lines in close horizontal and vertical patterns which are especially visible above the brow line. Five pierced holes along her forehead, one in each ear, and one in each palm, may be indicative of other decorative items (like the gold ring) that once adorned this sculpture. Her wrists and legs have incised diagonal line patterns - perhaps in imitation of tattooing or scarification. The red bands around her knees may represent an article of clothing, but otherwise she appears naked, with small, high breasts and detailed genitals. These figures were included alongside vessels and metal ornaments in shaft and chamber tombs - perhaps as guardians or companions for the deceased. Stylized figures like this one come from the Cauca River drainage, and are called slab figures. Most are male, making this a rare find!
