Lot 118C
Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 800 CE. A striking and very rare piece of ancient metalwork! A large and elaborately delineated ceremonial staff bell cast in almost solid copper (the early cultures of Peru had not yet learned to combine elements, like tin, to their copper to make bronze), the lower section in a rounded form with 4 looping rings from which bells hang. Above the rounded section is an out-turned flattened surface from which bell-like rings are suspended. What really sets this example apart is the fantastic sacrificial scene taking place along the top featuring three men donning hats surrounding a large, horned deer. One of the figures is weilding a knife, another is holding a rope around the deer's head and holding a club, and the third man is steadying the animal by holding its tail and buttocks. A rare depiction of an unfortunate reality among the ancients of Peru! Custom stand. Size: staff finial itself measures 3.75" W x 4.25" H (9.5 cm x 10.8 cm); 5.75" H (14.6 cm) with stand
