Description:

East Asia, Japan, Edo period, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. Far more rare than the full-size helmet, this was an important gift to a young man often given in advance of Children's Day, or sometimes upon the birth of the son of a Samurai-class individual. Comprised of approximately 47 thin iron plates fastened together with gilded bronze bands and decorative elements, braided neck-guard, painted textile fukigaeshi, gilded bronze kuwagata (with lengthy inscription on one) and dragon form Maedate. Remarkably well preserved and quite visually appealing! Comes with wooden stand. Size: 14" W x 14.5" H (35.6 cm x 36.8 cm); 18" H (45.7 cm) on included custom stand.

The inscription on the reverse of the Kuwagata partially reads as: "Made by Kusonoki Mashishige, as an homage to a national treasure created by Tomo Sane, Heian Period…"
