Pre-Columbian, southeast Mexico, Huastec or Huasteca Maya, Late Postclassic Period, ca. 1200 to 1521 CE. A rare carved stone figure of "Mam," an old man deity having ancestral qualities of the Maya. He is associated with a title of respect meaning "grandfather" and the name Mam is applied to a number of different Maya deities including earth spirits, mountain spirits, and the four Bacabs which guard and protect the four pillars holding up the surface of the world. He stands, stoop-backed with weight supported on post, his wrinkled and smiling face showing a kind benevolence. Size: 11" L x 5.5" W x 14" H (27.9 cm x 14 cm x 35.6 cm)
