Iran, Achaemenid Empire, Persia, 5th century BCE. An incredible and incredibly important silver rhyton - a type of drinking horn. Tall conical body in repeating ribs with top band of incised palmettes and floral elements. The most remarkable aspect of this rhyton is the mythical beast at the base. Comprised of a beast made up of bird head with incredible detailing, antelope horns, lion's legs and paws and the wings of a bird on his back; small opening on his chest. Size: 5.75" L x 4" W x 10.5" H (14.6 cm x 10.2 cm x 26.7 cm)
