Description:

Japan, Edo Period, ca. 18th century CE. This is a fabulous bone netsuke (weight at the end of an Inro) in the form of an old man resting on a rock outcropping. He holds a large crooked staff with a frog atop partially on his head, wonderful folds of his robe with incised patterns and a small basket behind him. This carving is a relatively common form found in 18th and 19th century Edo period netsuke from the Miwa School, based on the tale of a government official in 10th century China often known as Gama Sennin. The story goes that he fished a white toad out of a well and the toad took him on magical journeys. Size: 2.875" H (7.3 cm).

Provenance: From the Paul and Louise Bernheimer collection of Japanese Edo and Meiji Period Netsukes, Cambridge, MA and Laguna Woods, Ca. Acquired before 1980 and all made at least 75 years before the 1970 ivory ban.
