Description:

Western Asia, Persia (Iran) or possibly Syria, Ilkhanid (Il-Khanid, Ilkhanate), ca. 14th century CE. An ornately decorated ceramic bowl, of a classic hemispheric form with a concave pedestal foot. The interior is decorated via an underglaze technique, featuring twelve petaloid panels, six of which are adorned with blue floral motifs alternating with six featuring dotted diamond motifs delineated in black and blue with a cream ground. The segments are outlined in deep blue radiating bands flanked by slender black linear bands, all against a creamy white ground. The exterior, in contrast, features broadly spaced petaloid motifs in a similar color scheme. Incredible silvery and rainbow iridescence imbue this piece with even more beauty. Size: 7.75" W x 4" H (19.7 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection; acquired from Sotheby's New York 17 December 1998 lot 487
