Ignacio Gil (Spanish, 1913-2003). Oil on canvas, 20th c. Signed at lower right. A striking painting by Ignacio Gil, a Spanish artist best known for painting the people and the sea in Ibiza, Spain. In the foreground of this composition, Gil features a touching vignette - a mother holding an infant beside a young girl holding her baby doll. Beyond are fisherman hard at work on the shore, perhaps preparing to head out to sea in the boat to the right. Gil also includes an array of traditional whitewashed houses - the reason Ibiza is known as the White Island - and finally, a gorgeous azure sky dotted by billowing clouds over a spectacular sandy beach and the sparkling turquoise Mediterranean Sea. All is rendered with Gil's expressive brushwork and vibrant palette. Size (sight view): 27.5" L x 35.5" W (69.8 cm x 90.2 cm) Size (frame): 39.5" L x 47.5" W (100.3 cm x 120.6 cm)

About the artist: Ignacio Gil was born in Barcelona and began studying art when he was just nine years old. Gil trained at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona under Felix Mestres and Vicente Borras. The school awarded him a silver medal in 1930, and in 1936, he won a traveling scholarship to study throughout Spain. He also visited several Latin American countries. Gil's honors include: the silver medal of the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona (1930), the first medal at the International Exhibition of Palma de Mallorca (1941), the prize at the National Exhibition of Barcelona (1944), and two first prizes and an extraordinary first prize at the Painters of Africa Exhibition (1955, 1960 and 1961). In addition to his Ibiza scenes, Gil painted fishing ports throughout the Mediterranean, landscapes throughout the Iberian peninsula, and various European cities.
