Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Ica culture, ca. 1000 CE. Beautiful and large coca bag woven in natural cream colored cotton fibers with stunningly intricate embroidery, seemingly of camelid fibers, in hues of cranberry red, cerulean blue, and gold. The composition of the embroidery is comprised of four long panels of an x-patterned motif alternating with central concentric diamonds. At the corners of the bag are four plaited ties. 21-3/4" (55.5 cm) x 21-1/4" (54 cm) Provenance: Ex-Artemis Gallery; Ex-Mitchell private collection, WA, acquired in 1970s.
