Europe, Spain to France, Celtic / Iberian culture, ca. 300 BCE to 100 CE. A beautiful piriform wheel-thrown, baked clay vessel with a bulbous body decorated with fine line paintings in a red umber hue on a white ground - the central register depicting hunters aiming arrows at their prey (the central victim being a bovine or equine creature shown with either raised hairs or skeletal sections) amidst stylized geometric and curvilinear (possibly floral) motifs - with a narrow register of additional abstract decoration above followed by a wave band and a series of striations below. Twin lug handles are applied to the rim just above the short slender neck, and the entire piece rests upon a petite ring base. A stunning piece, impressive for its elegant form, but most of all for the fine line painting of the figural program as well as the ornament and inscription filled field. Size: 3.375" W x 3.625" H (8.6 cm x 9.2 cm)
The term Celtiberian refers to a group of peoples who lived in the Pre-Roman era in northern and central Spain or in the region between the Iberian tribes of the Mediterranean coast on the Iberian peninsula and the Celtic tribes of the interior of the peninsula. Largely it refers incorrectly to the totality of all ancient Celtic and Iberian tribes on the Iberian peninsula.
