Description:

United States, Chicago, Denoyer Geppert Company, ca. 1915. A handsomely sculpted and painted plaster model of the underside of a human brain created by the Denoyer Geppert Company, a source for human anatomical models for health and science education. Denoyer Geppert was founded in Chicago by L. Philip Denoyer and Otto E. Geppert. Both men were former employees of the U.S. branch of W. and A. K. Johnston of Scotland and Nystrom (suppliers for many Chicago globe makers). In these early years, the firm advertised itself as a manufacturer and supplier of ”visual demonstration equipment for geography, history and the biological sciences.” The label at the top of this example reads, "We serve the Biological Sciences; Denoyer Geppert Co. Chicago; Models, Charts, Specimens, Skeletons, Slides." A wonderful model from the early days of the Denoyer Geppert Company. Size: 10" in diameter.

Provenance: Ex-Historia Antiques, James Caswell, Santa Monica, CA.

A highlight from the later years of Denoyer Geppert's globe-making history occurred in 1969, when the company introduced its Lunar Globe in collaboration with NASA to honor the Apollo 10 voyage to the moon. The Apollo 10 astronauts actually presented the first Lunar Globe based on the pictures provided by Apollo 10 to President Nixon at the White House. Denoyer Geppert continued producing globes until the early 1980s when Rand McNally purchased the remains of Denoyer-Geppert and sold the scientific model business in 1985. Today what remains of the original company continues to manufacture and sell human anatomy educational models.
