United States, WWII, ca. 1944 to 1945. Huge artillery shell converted into a fine piece of trench art. This shell features a rearing horse with cowboy waving his hat with the caption "Buck Jones" as well as another race horse holding his jockey, a colt labeled "Pensive" and finally a horse head in profile. Buck Jones was a noted cowboy moviestar from the 1920's to the 1940's and one of the greatest of the "B" movie stars. Pensive was a thoroughbred horse who competed for the Triple Crown in 1944 and won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes but lost at the Belmont Stakes. Size: Shell measures a huge 23" H making it one of the largest we have ever seen. Provenance: Ex-private Young collection, Colorado Springs, CO collection.
