Central Asia, Tibet, ca. early 20th century CE. This is a massive thangka painted on a thick cotton panel that should be framed to properly display this incredible painting! At the center is a monk / lama figure holding a damaru drum and a wheel of dharma, with four mandalas surrounding. Painted thangkas with mandalas and yantras are often used to meditate and teach students about the different aspects of Buddhist philosophy and practice. The images and symbols in the mandala or yantra can be used to illustrate concepts such as the nature of reality, the path to enlightenment, and the different forms of Buddhas and bodhisattvas.
