Description:

Klatle-bhi (First Nations Canadian, Salish-Kwakwak'wakw, 1966 - present) "Otter Woman Mask," wood & horsehair, ca. 2002 CE. A massive cedar wood mask of the supernatural being known as Otter Woman, with gray-greenish, diseased looking skin and bloodshot eyes. The otter is revered as the most powerful guardian spirit, and they are believed to have once been humans, possessing the combined knowledge of both species. This Otter Woman has a dark side with the ability to traverse between the realms of the spirit world and the human world, and shapeshifting to entice and deceive. The interior is signed and dated by the artist. Klatle-bhi is a master carver and member of the Squamish Nation with pieces shown internationally in galleries and museums, including the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City and the Burke Museum of Natural History in Seattle. He was also commissioned to carve the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics totem pole that stood in the First Nations pavilion. Size of mask: 13" W x 16" H (33 cm x 40.6 cm); the hair adds an additional 24" length (61 cm)
