Ancient Seas, late Jurassic period, ca. 160 to 154 million years ago. A large, fossilized ammonite shell in limestone from the Quenstedtoceras genus, known for the tight spiral and ribbed exterior. The massive ammonite is remarkable for the preservation - shells of this size often do not survive fossilization - the shells often compress and collapse under the pressure- however the largest species could reach up to 6 feet (1.8 m) in diameter! Ammonites are an extinct marine mollusk that were related to the living coleoid family, including octopus and squid. The name "ammonite" came from Pliny the Elder after the Egyptian god Ammon, who was typically depicted wearing ram's horns that Pliny thought these fossils resembled. This is an impressive specimen to display with superb preservation to the ribs and recessed whorl! Size: 18" Diameter x 4.5" W (45.7 cm x 11.4 cm)
