Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. An enormous black stone ear spool, carved using hand tools like drills and sandstone. It is unclear if huge, heavy spools like this were made to be worn by living humans, placed only in graves, or used as decorations on statuary. Size: 3.1" W x 0.75" H (7.9 cm x 1.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex-James Bernard Byrnes estate. Mr. Byrnes was the first curator of LACMA
