Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. 20th century CE. A set of 2 hand-carved wooden shields, each of tall rectangular form with sizable circular motifs carved across the obverse. The first shield is adorned with dozens of rounded stone inlays arranged in horizontal rows, and the taller shield features large, dark-hued panels down the center. Hues of yellow, orange, and black provide a burst of color to each wooden defensive implement. Size of largest: 53" H (134.6 cm); 66" H (167.6 cm) on included custom stand.
