Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Veraguas culture, Period V to VI, ca. 700 to 1500 CE. A stunning, huge and superbly crafted eagle pendant, comprised of 86 to 87% gold (equivalent to 20K+ gold), with broad ovoid wings projecting from either side of the raised body. The massive forked tail dwarfs the size of the miniscule raptorial talons which sit just below its rounded chest. His exceptionally detailed head is composed of encircled eyes, a slender neck decorated in chevron pattern, and a dramatically-curved aquiline beak. Four suspension loops are at the top of its head along with single loop on reverse. A breathtaking example of high-quality Panamanian gold-smithing! Size: 4.875" W x 3.5" H (12.4 cm x 8.9 cm) with an amazing weight of 154 grams - just under 5 troy ounces!

This magnificent example is accompanied by a copy of an appraisal letter dated August 18th, 1987 signed by Robert Sonin. Until his passing, Sonin was considered the expert of experts on all things golden from the Pre-Columbian world. His authentication was almost universally accepted. This example has further been tested using XRF technology. Results show a composition of 86.26 to 87.14% gold with additional copper, silver and trace metals, all consistent with authentic examples from this period.
