Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo (Dine), ca. mid-20th century CE. An impressive nickel-brass ring featuring a massive oblong turquoise stone set in a saw-tooth bezel, adorned with curved wirework. An unidentified maker's mark is stamped on the verso. Due to its large size, the ring seems impractical for regular wear, suggesting it might have been an Old Pawn piece. The pawning system, particularly involving Navajo jewelry and traders, played a crucial role in the economy of the American Southwest, especially from the late 19th to mid-20th century. This system allowed Navajo artisans to use their handcrafted jewelry and other valuables as collateral for loans at trading posts. Despite the use of brass, the considerable value of the turquoise stone alone is noteworthy. Size: 4.60" L x 1.4" W (11.7 cm x 3.6 cm); band opening: 0.83" Diameter (2.1 cm); US ring size 10
