Southeast Asia, Northern Burma (present day Myanmar), ca. 1850 CE. A hand-carved Mandalay style wooden monk of a very large scale, liberally embellished with gold leaf and red lacquer, his eyes inlaid with white stone - the irises painted black. The devotee kneels with his legs folded beneath him and presses his hands together in a prayerful gesture. He wears beautiful robes with ornate trim displaying elaborate designs inlaid with pieces of mirror and green glass as well as translucent glass round beads. Note how the drapery folds cascade elegantly behind the figure. Size: 24.5" W x 25.75" H (62.2 cm x 65.4 cm)
As we see in this example, Mandalay style figures generally demonstrate keen attention to details in the robes and often the body, face, and hands are fully gilded. As is characteristic of Mandalay figures, this monk's eyes are set far apart and the hairline or hairband runs from ear to ear. He puts forth a pleasant smile and countenance. Mandalay style was influenced by the Thai and Arakan style as craftsmen from Thailand were brought to Burma in the mid 1700s in large numbers due to their paramount carving skills. These artisans developed their own unique style blending Ayutthaya and Arakan influences.
