Description:

Pre-Columbian, Xalitla, Guerrero, Mexico, ca. 300 BCE. This is an enormous ear flare effigy made of a grey-green stone with a polished surface. This was probably made to be placed into a monumental statue or as an offering in a tomb, although we know from pottery that the Guerrero people did wear (or at least created artwork that wears) enormous ear flares. Still, the sheer weight of these seems to disqualify them from being worn by a living person… Size: 3.5" W (8.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Magor collection, Chicago IL, 1960's. The flare is marked "Xalitla Grro" by the previous owner who found it in situ while traveling through the Balsas River region of Guerrero, 50 years ago.
