Description:

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 4th to 3rd century CE. A giant bronze basin, sometimes known as a louterion, with steep walls, a slightly curved base, and a rolled rim. Around the rim are uniform, rounded projections that give it a textured appearance. Made using copper imported from Cyprus, this was a high status item, made for use by wealthy people. A basin of this type was probably made to give offerings of water or wine at a temple or at funerary rites. In the Greek religion, the giving of these offerings was so important that when people died, they would commonly leave money to pay for a basin to have at their gravesite. Size: 13.75" L x 16" W x 4.5" H (34.9 cm x 40.6 cm x 11.4 cm)
