Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A massive bowl resting on short ring foot, the basin painted with three fish, in purple and red and outlined in black, on a creamy beige ground- the purple hue is indicative of the later Gran Cocle styles known as Conte and Macaracas. Artists would create what some call "split representations" the image will represent more than one animal - these fish have upturned snouts, jagged teeth, and barbed fins - perhaps an amalgam of both fish and other marine or freshwater creatures. Size: 16.5" Diameter x 5.5" H (41.9 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: ex-private USA collection, acquired before 2000. Complete provenance will be provided to winning bidder; all items from this collection have been appraised by Marianne Huber in 2014

  • Condition: Professionally repaired and restored. Basin and foot are restored from several large pieces with infill and overpainting along break lines. Well done and nearly indiscernible. Scattered manganese deposits on the surface.

Shipping costs will be added to your invoice at auction's end based on information given when you registered to bid - we strive to offer the most economical shipping costs to ensure safe transit. Our shippers of choice are DHL for International shipments and UPS for domestic shipments, but we are able to ship via other carriers at the buyer's expense as deemed necessary or by request.

For shipments of oversize items, Artemis Gallery will assist the buyer in working with a third-party shipping provider. For shipments outside of the USA, customs and duties may apply upon entry into said country, and this fee, if any, is the buyer's responsibility.
