Description:

West Africa, Liberia/Ivory Coast, ca. early 20th century CE. A grand Dan initiation ceremony mask comprised of a finely carved wood face with metalwork and red fabric highlighting the eyes, cowry shell adorning the upper periphery of the visage, additional cowry shells adorning the hide covered conical helmet (which also features some animal hair), and an elegantly twisted antelope horn emerging from the peak. The cowry shells not only add to the beauty of the mask but also signify that the spirits have blessed the youthful initiate with wealth and good fortune, as cowry shells were once used as money. Masks like this example were created to be worn by a male dancer and only carved by initiated members of the all male Poro society. Once the male mask dancer puts on the mask, he is transformed into a sacred spirit. The masked dancer next falls into a deep trance during rituals and delivers a messages of wisdom from his ancestors. Although the message is inaudible and difficult to decipher, a wise member who accompanies the dancer during the ceremony and translates his messages which typically provide guidelines for a way of life that will result in good health, longevity, and prosperity. Quite and impressive example! Size: 12.5" deep x 9.25" W x 27.25" H (31.8 cm x 23.5 cm x 69.2 cm)
