Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. An adorable and impressively sizable ceramic vessel in the form of a coatimundi, standing on 4 chubby legs as he curiously twists his head to the right, pointing his elongated snout upwards. Enveloped in russet-hued slip, the adorable animal displays a rotund body and a large head with pointed ears, recessed eyes, and a round nose. A huge flared spout rises from his back, while a petite tail curves at his posterior, doubling as a handle. The coati, or coatimundi, are known for their adept use of their long, slender snouts to find grubs and insects and their wily use of their forelegs to hunt for reptiles, even under rocks. Coatis were a food source in ancient Mexico; masterful ceramic depictions of the animal, such as this example, were intended to provide security in the afterlife. Size: 17.75" L x 14.9" W x 14.1" H (45.1 cm x 37.8 cm x 35.8 cm)
