Description:

East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, Majiayao (also Gansu-Yangshao) culture, ca. 2300 to 2000 BCE. A hand-built pottery jar of sizable form exhibiting an inverted piriform body, a pair of loop handles, a narrow foot, and a flared rim. Across the upper half of the beige-ground vessel is a series of black linear patterns set against an orange background. The Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, is from what is known as Gansu or Qinghai province today. Size: 13.25" L x 11.6" W x 15.25" H (33.7 cm x 29.5 cm x 38.7 cm)

  • Condition: Repair and restoration to one handle, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Chips to rim, body, handles, and base, with light earthen deposits, scattered pitting, and fading to pigment, otherwise in great condition. Nice preservation to linear motifs.
