Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A large, green glazed red clay Hu jar of a pear-like shape that continues upwards and resolves to a wide rim and most likely had a lid in its original state. The vessel boasts an elegant form with a sinuous silhouette punctuatued with incised bands around the mid section. During the Han dynasty, storage jars (hu) were created to fill with wine and foodstuffs for the afterlife as food was abundant and the standard of living was most comfortable for individuals of all classes. According to scholars, the Hu jar originated as a bronze vessel during the Shang Period (1600-1045 BCE). A lovely example adorned with thick, lustrous glaze of rich green hues. Size: 11.75" W at widest point x 15.75" H (29.8 cm x 40 cm)
