Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, southern Nayarit region, Chinesco, Lagunillas, Type A, Protoclassic, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A remarkable pottery male figure of the Lagunillas Type A form, posed naturalistically with arms folded on knees and back slightly arched. Nude, the figure presents a slender body with prominent genitalia, the burnished surfaces adorned with black and red-painted features, such as a shoulder bag, a pair of collar necklaces, and a black headdress or coiffure with 2 protruding horns. The bulbous head displays heavy-lidded eyes, a septum-ring adorned nose, a slightly-open mouth, and a narrow chin, all flanked by a pair of curved ears lined with ear ornaments. His recessed eyes and smile give a quizzical aura to his overall confident posture. The mottled surface of this figure is a naturally occurring sign of age. Size: 9.5" L x 8.5" W x 20" H (24.1 cm x 21.6 cm x 50.8 cm)

Lagunillas is a sub-style from the Nayarit region and figures of this style are notable for their smooth burnished surfaces, painted ornament, and emotive expressions. The largest of the “ Chinesco” figures are the Lagunillas Type A, portraying youthful men and women in relaxed postures during initiation rites.
