Description:

**Originally listed at 2500**

Pre-Columbian, modern day Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. A large mummy false head, made of coarse, woven textile, painted with a yellow face and given a silver nose, eyes, mouth, and headband. Red cloth with tasseled ends give the figure hair; brown tassels give it eyelashes. The head is stuffed and heavy. Chancay mummies were wrapped in a seated position with yards and yards of cloth, in order to create a bundle, called a "fardo". The mummy was then given a false head - like this one here - and wrapped in its cloth were small tools like spindles, cocoa, ear spools, and sometimes pottery figures or stones. This is a large, impressive example in excellent condition. Size: 15" W x 20" H (38.1 cm x 50.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private New York Collection acquired at Sothebys, Nov 20, 1995, lot 26
