Description:

Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kuba peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A large, dramatic mask from the Kuba Ngeende or Northern Kete peoples, hand-carved from a dark, hardwood to have a sloping countenance, a prominent nose, and deepset eyes with raised cheeks beneath them, white stripes painted down their broad surfaces. The smooth forehead above terminates in an incised horizontal band, perhaps denoting hair. Masks like this striking example were made for initiation ceremonies. Size: 10" W x 17" H (25.4 cm x 43.2 cm); 20.75" H (52.7 cm) on included custom stand.
