Description:

Western/Central Africa, northwestern Cameroon and northeastern Nigeria, Kirdi peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hammered iron shield of a hefty form bearing hundreds of stippling marks in repousse. The ovoid shield has a flat base, a protruding central boss surrounded by six large circular sections, and white pigment creating minimalist linear motifs both above and below. An iron bar handle is attached with prongs that pierce through the verso to the front and is wrapped with gray and tan fabric to increase the grip and comfort of its wielder. Size: 19.5" W x 32.75" H (49.5 cm x 83.2 cm)
