Description:

North America, southern United States, Texas, ca. 19th century CE. A hefty copper basin used at frontier campsites in Texas for washing clothes and cooking large meals, though thankfully not at the same time. The round-bottomed vessel has broad walls and a deep basin surface surrounded by a thin rim. Vessels like this example were invaluable additions to the accoutrements of any frontier caravan as it served an incredibly important purpose: keeping the members clean and fed. Rich patina has formed within the basin interior, and ample soot and coke deposits visible on the exterior are indicative of repeated use. Size: 23.6" W x 11.4" H (59.9 cm x 29 cm)

Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired in 2006; ex-Mike Buttress collection, Plainview, Texas, USA
