East Asia, China, later Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A very large, striking, cast bronze urn, decorated with a style inspired by some of China's earliest dynasties. Just as in the western world from around the 1600s, during the Qing Dynasty Chinese people became fascinated by the artifacts of their own antiquity, and produced numerous pieces of art that have become beautiful antiques in their own right. This example stands on a flared foot, then rises and expands to a sharply delineated shoulder; above that is a broad neck with a slightly flared mouth and rim. Twin handles, each with its upper terminal the head of a mythical animal, are situated vertically at the shoulder. Each of these has a bronze ring hanging on its lower end. Around the neck, shoulder, and foot are applied bronze bands with low relief decorative motifs that consciously channel Shang -period bronzes from elite tombs: fantastical creatures, dense, patterned backgrounds, and spear-like forms extending from the band around the shoulder.
