Description:

Spain or Mexico, ca. 18th-19th centuries CE. This is a large oil on canvas painting that would have stretched out in a large space. This painting follows the long artistic tradition of painting the Resurrection with an upper, brightly lit area where Jesus stands and a darker area below. The artwork depicts the Resurrection of Jesus, with the stigmata clearly visible on his hands and feet. He is holding a white flag displaying a red cross, which may be a reference to the cross of St George, symbolizing struggle; the cross, of course, is a symbol of Jesus's defeat of death. Jesus stands over his shadowy stone tomb; behind and below him is a mourning man bent over it. Further below him are three Roman centurions, the guards placed there prevent the removal of his body. Size: 121" long x 67" wide.
