Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Northern Veracruz region, Huastec, Postclassic period, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A beautiful openwork pendant of a deep concave form which is hand-carved from a segment of Fasciolaria (or Tulip snail) shell. Within the body is a depiction of the deity Chicahuaztli, a manifestation of the Aztec deity Xipe Totec, standing with outstretched arms and head in profile, with a large circular abdomen surmounting a trapezoidal skirt adorned with stippled and linear decorations. Two small perforations above the figure's head enable the pectoral to be suspended from a necklace. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 3.4" W x 3.8" H (8.6 cm x 9.7 cm); 5.1" H (13 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Small repair to one side of periphery. Minor chips to skirt and flanking area, with softening to some finer details, and darkening to shell color commensurate with age. Light earthen deposits and light patina throughout.
