Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero area, Huastec culture, Preclassic to early Classic period, ca. 350 BCE to 550 CE. An impressive, hand-sculpted greenstone figure of a female shown seated with legs bent before her as she rests her hands on her knees just below a pair of petite breasts. Displaying a sizable head, the ancient woman gazes forward, presenting slender eyes beneath a narrowed brow, a side nose, and full lips held slightly parted in a gentle smile. A thick collar wraps around her thick neck, while a pair of lengthy, rectangular ears flank her stylized visage. The figure is capped by a tiered headdress. Size: 4.4" W x 8.5" H (11.2 cm x 21.6 cm); 10.8" H (27.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000

  • Condition: Repaired with restoration over break lines, though some break lines visible in areas. Resurfacing throughout. Chipping with minor losses to both ears and headdress. Expected nicks, chips, and abrasions throughout with some light softening of detail, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice. Old collection label and modern inscription on verso.
